ARTIST STATEMENT
My work explores the layered experiences of Latina womanhood, tracing how memory, migration, and the female body intersect as sites of transformation. I approach painting as both a meditative and reconstructive act — a way to piece together fragments of identity shaped by diaspora, ancestry, and belonging.
Through a fusion of aquarelle, oil, and acrylic techniques layered with textile motifs, collage, and digital transparencies, I construct images that blur the boundaries between body and landscape, spirit and material. Threads, fabric, and gesture become metaphors for inheritance and repair — the ways in which cultural memory is passed, unraveled, and rewoven across generations.
My ongoing series, Unraveled Identities: Memory and the Female Body in Transit, explores how it is my strong belief that patriarchy will end its rule when we face the issues of colonialism head on. A very important investigation is how The women of the Caribbean and its diaspora navigate multiplicity: between languages, histories, and geographies. The work is deeply influenced by my Afro-diasporic roots, my background in printmaking, and the intergenerational stories that have shaped my sense of self.
By merging traditional and digital practices, I create a visual language that resists erasure and celebrates hybridity. Each composition becomes a form of embodied storytelling — a reclamation of space and voice. Through color, light, and layered materials, I seek to transform displacement into a kind of belonging, and vulnerability into power.
